best-food-refrigerators-in-india

If you’re looking to buy a refrigerator, the Indian market has some great models.

Some are energy-efficient (therefore cheap to run). Some are very spacious which is great for large families. Some are very stylish and modern.

Whatever your needs, I recommend you stick to the top manufacturers like Haier, LG, Whirlpool and Samsung.

In my opinion, the best refrigerator in India for value is the Haier 195L Direct-Cool Model. It’s super energy-efficient, and not too big or expensive.

However if you want something bigger, the Whirlpool 300 L model is the way to go. And if you’re all about style, I love this model from LG with a purple orchid design on the front.

If you’d like more information, read on to read my in-depth reviews and to see what other models made my list!

What to Look for When Buying a Refrigerator

The type of fridge you buy depends on both your individual needs and the demands of the area in which you live in.  Here are a few things that you should consider.

Style

Fridges come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, some come with freezers, others don’t, some will fit under a counter, others are much larger.  Some are even designed specifically to chill soft drinks, snacks or wine whilst others provide space for all possible types of produce.

In this instance we have assumed that you are looking for an all purpose fridge, with a freezer, that is capable of sustaining a family.

Even with this in mind there are still a number of options regarding style.  Two door fridges tend to have a very clear separation between fridge and freezer but even these can vary greatly in style.  Some have the freezer at the top and the fridge at the bottom, whilst others have the compartments side by side.

Single and triple door fridges are also featured in the above list.  Single doors tend to have an internal freezer located at the top of the fridge, whereas triple door units have a completely separate compartment for keeping fruit and vegetables fresh.

Size

Your decision here needs to be balanced by two factors.  Firstly the size of your family and how much food you need to store, secondly how much space you have for the fridge.  There is a possible third factor to consider too, as larger fridges do tend to be more expensive than smaller ones and less energy efficient, meaning they will cost you more to run.

The list above has fridges with a relatively small 190 litre capacity, right up to a huge 565 litre capacity.  You need to consider what size you need, can you afford it and will it fit in your house before purchasing?

Energy Efficiency

This is both a consideration of the environment and a consideration of the size of your pockets.  Energy efficient fridges use less electricity to run which means that you save money.  If this is important look out for the energy rating as well as the added extras such as holiday mode and the ability to allocate energy usage according to need.

Inverter compatibility and Other Back Ups

This will be a very high on your list of priorities if you live in an area that’s particularly susceptible to power cuts.  Some fridges have the capability of automatically switching to inverter power when the mains is cut.

Other models may not have this capability but may have other systems in place to ensure that food remains cool for as long as possible when there is a power outage.

Fruit, Vegetable and Fresh Produce Storage

Most fridges will have a separate compartment for storing fruit and vegetables.  However, in some this compartment will be specially designed to keep fruit and vegetables fresh for as long as possible, in others the compartment will be a completely separate part of the unit.

You will need to consider how much fresh fruit and vegetables you use on a daily basis and how much you need to store and factor this into your decision.

Conclusion

A fridge is a vital part of one’s home.  Buying fresh food and consuming it in its entirety on a daily basis is not conducive to modern living.  If we are to live efficiently and economically we need to be able to store fresh, raw and cooked food effectively.  This is why buying a new fridge is such an important decision.

You should expect a fridge to last you many years, the fridges listed above all have compressors that are warrantied for at least five years, in most cases for ten years.  In order for your fridge to last you this long it’s not just about the quality, remember it’s about choosing the right product in the first place and not having to replace it unnecessarily.  To that end, ensure you have read this article carefully before making your purchase.

Haier 195 L 4 Star Direct-Cool Single Door Refrigerator

Pros
  • 1 hour icing technology means that the freezer can be used within an hour of switching on.
  • Bigger, longer lasting cool pad. If you suffer from regular power cuts this will ensure that your food is safe.
  • 10 years of warranty shows that the manufacturer is confident in this product.
Cons
  • Space allocated to keep water bottles is small.

The Haier 195 L 4 Star Direct-Cool Single Door Refrigerator was an obvious choice for our top recommended product.  It is a refrigerator packed with innovative new technology, but simple enough for anyone to plug in and use without any specialist installation required.

For a single doored refrigerator it has a large 195 litre capacity and comes with a four star energy rating.  Single doored refrigerators tend to be more economical than larger ones and also have the added bonus of being able to fit into much tighter spaces.

This Haier model comes with a special 1 hour icing technology (1HIT) which can bring the temperature of the freezer down from room temperature to minus five degree Celsius in just 60 minutes.  Handy when you first set the freezer up, but also useful if something needs to be cooled down quickly.

There is a vegetable drawer included which will keep all of your fruit and vegetables fresh for up to seven days, it will also ensure they stay odour free.  This is important for vegetables to retain their nutritional values, made up of their vitamins and minerals, but also makes sure they remain aesthetically pleasing, crunchy and tasty.

An important thing to consider is that the operation of this refrigerator is stabiliser free, working within a range of 135V-290V, this ensures that the compressor is well protected from any possible power fluctuations.

The cool pad in this particular model has been upgraded from what was supplied previously, it’s not only bigger, it retains coolness for up to 10 hours, even if the power to the refrigerator has been cut off.

Fridges are a safe place for all of our fresh produce, but they are also a haven for bacteria, fungi and other possible means of infection.  To combat this, this fridge is fitted with an anti fungal gasket which not only prevents the build up of potentially harmful bacteria, it also bars the entry in the first place.

The Haier 195 is also a particularly good choice of fridge if you have kids, due to the safety considerations fitted as standard.  There is a built in child lock which prevents small children from opening the door and pulling things out which could injure them.  It also functions perfectly as a lock to keep teenagers out of the fridge who may be on the lookout for unhealthy food.

A clean back without a grille is also an advantage if you have kids with wandering hands.

Quality is also denoted in the warranties offered with this product.  One year of comprehensive cover is included, and the compressor is covered for a further period of 9 years from purchase.

LG 260 L 4 Star Frost-Free Double Door Refrigerator

Pros
  • One of the most energy efficient compressors available on the market.
  • Multi Air Flow System ensures uniform coolness throughout.
  • Self-diagnosing problem solving negates the need for a technician visit for every problem.
Cons
  • Top freezer takes up a lot of space.

This fridge boasts one of the most technologically advanced compressors on the market, in terms of its energy efficiency.  It actively assesses the amount of food that you have placed within it and adjusts its cooling power appropriately.  According to the manufacturer this could end up saving you up to 48% on energy consumption.

Not only that, the compressor is also incredibly quiet running, ideal in smaller homes where sleeping in close proximity to the fridge is not uncommon.

The food inside this LG fridge is kept healthy and fresh tasting thanks to the Multi Air Flow system.  Multiple vents throughout the interior ensures that the cooling process is even at all times.

We’re used to our phones, computers and TVs being smart, but not our fridges!  This model comes with LGs trademarked Smart Diagnosis technology.  LG knows that even the best fridges require some TLC at some point in their lives, but they have cut out the bit where you have to call an engineer out to solve the problem.  You can activate the smart diagnosis yourself, the fridge will then contact an engineer to advise the issue and he will then call you to tell you how to solve it.

Think how much time and money that could save!

Other features include a Moist Balance Crisper, which optimises the moisture in your vegetable drawer keeping them fresh and crunchy; an LED light at the top of the unit ensures uniform brightness throughout the fridge once the door is opened; and a double twist ice tray, which lets you get extra ice, when you need it.

LG is also a company that prides itself on being Eco-friendly and this fridge is no exception when it comes to that.

Whirlpool 300 L In Frost-Free Multi Door Refrigerator

Pros
  • Fresh Keeper is a dedicated fruit and vegetable store designed to keep produce fresh for as long as possible.
  • Airboosters control the circulation of cold air within the unit, making sure that each compartment gets the exact cooling it needs.
  • Microblock - a substance that is actually within the material the Fresh Keeper compartment is made out of, prevents contaminates for a lifetime.
Cons
  • No space for larger bottles to be stored upright.

This free standing refrigerator is unusual in the sense that it has three separate doors.  As well as having a fridge and a freezer compartment, the lowest door is the Fresh Keeper, a section that is dedicated to keeping fresh fruit and vegetables in the best condition for the longest possible time.

In most fridges, the storage of fruit and vegetables is difficult as cold air naturally takes moisture out of them.  In this Whirlpool model however, the specially designed compartment ensures that cold air continually flows around it.  The contents remain necessarily cool but are also able to maintain their moisture and therefore their freshness.

Not only do your fruit and vegetables remain fresher in this fridge, they are also protected from dangerous microbes thanks to the Microblock.  The Microblock is an additive which is woven into the material the compartment is made out of.  It kills 99.9% of all known microbes and helps to prevent your fresh produce being contaminated.

This model has a capacity of 300 litres and three storage shelves inside it, which are manufactured from toughened glass.  In the freezer compartment you can find an ice twister and collector.

Whirlpool 340 L 3 Star Frost-Free Double Door Refrigerator

Pros
  • Intelligent sensors ensure that power is diverted to wherever it is needed in the unit. This makes every part of this unit work effectively whilst ensuring energy efficiency.
  • Everyday Fresh Tray allows optimum usage of the fridges space.
Cons
  • No light in the freezer compartment.
  • No lock on door.

Another of Whirlpool’s refrigerators that come with the ‘6th Sense Intellifresh Technology’.  This model contains three ‘IntelliSensors’, one is located on the outer panel and one each are located in the freezer and refrigerator compartments.

These sensors actively communicate with each other, distributing the energy amongst the compartments within the fridge as needed.  This ensures that the produce section keeps fruit and vegetables fresh by providing better moisture retention; the freezer compartment is able to make ice much faster; and the main compartment is able to cool down water bottles much more quickly.

This fridge contains an Air Tower, consisting of strategically placed vents which have been designed to keep the coldness in the refrigerator identical throughout.  These vents contain anti-bacterial filters which ensure that your fresh food remains free of harmful microbes and is safe to eat.

At the bottom of the air tower is the Active Deo.  This is an integrated system which prevents odours from building up inside the fridge and keeps the air inside fresh.

As we know, power cuts are a frequent occurrence in some parts of India, which is why this fridge comes stocked with a chilling gel.  This enables the fridge to store cool air and actively release it if a power cut occurs.

Another handy feature of this fridge is the Everyday Fresh tray.  This is a compartment specifically for items you use every day, and allows you to store things at the back or in the corner of the fridge, but still be able to access them easily.

LG 190 L 4 Star Direct-Cool Single Door Refrigerator

Pros
  • Smart compressor, gives you maximum efficiency whilst maintaining absolute silent running.
  • Smart connect technology means that the refrigerator will automatically connect to your inverter in the event of a power cut.
Cons
  • Does not come with egg tray.
  • Smaller than some of the other models.

This model has one of the most advanced and energy efficient compressors available on the Indian market.  It gives you great savings in your energy bills, but its efficiency does not affect its practicality as it has a super silent operation which will suit all users.

Another innovation that features on this fridge is the Smart Connect system.  If you have an inverter in your home, to give you power when there is a power outage, then this fridge is smart enough to connect to that inverter when it needs to.  This makes sure that your food stays cool and safe, even when there is no power.

Toughened glass shelves within the unit ensure that they are capable of holding food items, regardless of the heavy containers being used to hold them.  According to manufacturers testing, these shelves can each take a load of up to 175KG.

A special lattice box helps to keep moisture at an optimum level, making it an ideal storage place for your fruit, vegetables and other fresh produce that needs temperatures and moisture levels kept constant.

There is also a removable anti-bacterial gasket which is airtight and prevents bacteria or dust accumulating in the door seal.  It also stops mould spores entering the refrigerator which keeps food from spoiling, as well as making sure it is both healthy and hygienic.

Haier HRF 618 SS Frost-free Side-by-Side Refrigerator

Pros
  • Huge capacity, yet slimline. Doors swing 90 degrees to allow easy access to produce drawers.
  • Highly energy efficient with functions that ensure it is one of the most Eco-friendly models available in India.
Cons
  • No inverter connection for compressor.

This is a side by side refrigerator with a difference, at only 66 cm in width it is slim enough to fit into tighter spaces that other SBS fridges might not be able to.  Even though it is slim, it still manages to retain a reputation as having one of the best fridge to freezer ratios out of all the SBS models in the Indian market.

Another unique feature of this model is the 90 degree contour door.  This means that the fruit and veg baskets can easily be removed, even if the fridge is placed in a tight space.  This is something other SBS models cannot always achieve.

It is a particularly energy efficient model and is likely to consume an estimated 0.98 units of electricity per day, according to testing carried out in Haier’s own labs.  This energy efficiency is apparent in a couple of unique features.

One of the features that helps to make this fridge particularly energy efficient is the Holiday Function.  Once you operate this function and leave the house, the fridge department will automatically set itself to 17 degrees Celsius, whilst the freezer compartment will function normally.  This reduces the amount of energy being consumed whilst at the same time keeping the fridge at a temperature level that won’t cause bad smells.

The other energy saving feature is the Fuzzy Logic function.  When this is activated the fridge and freezer can automatically adjust their temperatures according to ambient and internal variations.

Samsung 192 L 2 Star Direct Cool Refrigerator

Pros
  • Stylish design and energy efficient.
Cons
  • Shorter warranty than other fridges on the list.
  • No frost-free operation.
  • Only suitable for smaller families.

This one door refrigerator is one of the most stylish on our list.  It comes in a royal red colour with golden tendrils running down one side of it.  The majority of this model is made up of the refrigerator of course but there is a separate ‘Super Freeze Zone’ located at the top, which can be used to store frozen foods.

Other zones within the unit include the Vege Box, designed to keep your fruit and vegetables fresh and healthy for as long as possible; the Fresh Room, which keeps dairy products and other fresh foods cool and edible for much longer; and there’s also an extra large space in the door, where you can store liquids in bottles which are up to 2 litres in size.

There are a number of other useful design features that also demand a mention.  The shelves inside the fridge are manufactured from toughened glass which can withstand a colossal weight of up to 150 KG.  This means you don’t have to empty food out of heavy cooking pots before storing it.

If you need to lock your fridge at any time then this model has a handy and sturdy lock located neatly in the handle of the fridge door.  On the inside of the door there is an anti-bacterial gasket.  This not only prevents the build up of fungi, it also prevents bacteria from getting inside the fridge in the first place.

A clear view lamp at the top of the fridge compartment also illuminates the whole fridge, making it much easier to see what you’re after.
