Rava Upma Recipe

Rava upma is a traditional South Indian breakfast dish based on rava (semolina or suji). There are many types of delicious rava recipes in India, but the most common one and my personal favourite is definitely warm rava upma prepared with fried peanuts and cashew nuts. You can combine different spices and create your own personal favourite rava upma recipe, but I like to keep things simple and prepare this delicious breakfast with mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and just a pinch of hing.  Different recipes can also include different types of vegetables. This lovely rama is based on finely chopped onions, green chillies, and some ginger to taste. A beautiful breakfast option for the entire family.

Ingredients for Rava Upma

1 cup rava

  • 2 tbsp chana dal
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 tsp chopped ginger
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp hing
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp peanuts
  • 2 tbsp cashews

How to Make Rava Upma

  1. In a large frying pan, preheat the oil over medium-high heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Now add cashews and peanuts. Give it a good stir and continue to cook for 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add chopped green chillies, ginger, chana dal, and salt. Reduce the heat to medium and continue to cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly. Finally, add chopped onion and cook until translucent.
  3. Now, set the heat to high and pour in 2 cups of water. Bring it to a boil and immediately stir in one cup of rava. Give it a good stir and cook for one minute.
  4. Remove from the heat and cover the pan. Let it stand for 2-3 minutes before serving.
